Last week Year 12 Maths students visited Leeds Festival of Science to attend their Mix and Match Maths day. They attended lectures from Dr Kevin Houston, author of ‘How to Think like a Mathematician’, and University of Oxford Professor Vicky Neale. Dr Houston taught students all about the mathematics behind the ‘perfect shuffle’ and how to use this to amaze your friends with card tricks (or to deal yourself the perfect hand!). Students even tried some magic tricks for themselves, with mixed results… More traditionally, Vicky Neale presented a lecture on ‘Solving Equations’. The lecture briefly covered solutions to some famous equations and the mathematicians who solved them, including the infamous Fermat’s Last Theorem.
Coupled with a tour around the University of Leeds campus, the day was a great success in preparing our Year 12’s for Further Education. One student described it as ‘radical’!
