Dear Parent/Carer

Music Tuition at Outwood Grange Academy

Learning a musical instrument can be one of life’s greatest joys which is actively encouraged at Outwood Grange Academy. Music lessons are an excellent way for students to develop their skills and understanding of music, as well as giving them the potential for a lifelong passion and opportunity for social development.

The following music tuition is offered at Outwood Grange Academy:
  • Piano
  • Singing
  • Guitar (Classical, Acoustic and Electric)
  • Bass Guitar
  • Drum Kit
  • Woodwind (Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet)
  • Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass)
  • Trumpet

Music Tuition Request
In order to plan music tuition for the coming year, we ask you to complete and return the form attached to this letter.  Once a signed Music Tuition Request has been received this will remain in force until your child leaves Outwood Grange Academy or until the required notice in writing has been given, whichever occurs soonest. Please note that it can prove less straightforward to arrange lessons starting during the course of the school year and lessons are allocated on a first come, first serve basis. Although every effort will be made to arrange lessons requested after the start of the school year, spaces may not always be available, and a waiting list will be created when necessary.

Cost of Lessons
The cost of music tuition for the year from September 2025 is outlined below. Students can opt for a 20-minute individual lesson or a 20-minute shared lesson with one other student of a similar standard.

Individual lesson: £11 per week
Shared lessons: £5.50 per week

You will be invoiced by the Academy for each term’s lessons, to be paid in advance. Students will be offered 36 lessons per school year. Lessons missed due to the student’s absence from school (due to illness, for example) will not be refunded. In case of planned absences, it is the student’s responsibility to rearrange the lesson beforehand with the teacher. Any lessons missed due to school closure or teacher absence will be rescheduled or refunded.

All payments must be made in advance for the term via iPay which is available online. If you have any problems with this, please contact the Finance Office. Lessons will not commence until payment is received in full for the term prior to its commencement.  If payment is late, there will be no adjustment for the term charge.

Assisted Instrument Purchase Scheme and Loan Instruments
Parents are able to purchase Musical Instruments via school at a reduced cost (minus VAT). The Music Department also has a small stock of certain instruments which can be loaned to support your child’s home practice. If you are interested in either of these options, there is an additional letter with all of the key information and application form.

Fee Exemptions
Students taking GCSE or A level music are entitled to learn one instrument free of charge.

Students registered for free school meals are exempt from Music Tuition fees and are entitled to one shared lesson per week. Registers are kept and where students demonstrate poor attendance to their instrumental lessons, we will be forced to terminate the lessons. Please note that Free School Meals registration is necessary. To qualify for this exemption the child's parents (or carers) must meet the criteria set out in ‘A guide on how to obtain Free Schools Meals’ which is available online or from the Academy.

Organisation of Lessons
Lessons take place during the school day usually on a termly rota. Lessons are 20 minutes in duration. The days and times of lessons are published on Google Classroom. Students must check Google Classroom each week to check their lesson time.

Performance Opportunities
Playing and singing in groups is one of the most rewarding aspects of learning an instrument. Ensemble performance fosters skills of teamwork and the ability to respond with sensitivity to others. We offer various enrichment groups that enable students to perform with others.  The timetable is available on Google Classroom and in the Music Department.

Examinations and Assessment
A progress review or report from the instrumental teacher is sent to parents yearly. In addition, students may take external examinations, usually (ABRSM) Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity Guildhall or Rock School. Students will only be entered for these exams after discussion has taken place between the instrumental teacher and parents.

Termination of Lessons
You are required to give the Academy one term’s notice, in writing otherwise a term’s fees will be charged in lieu of notice. We ask that you inform the Head of Music in the Performing Arts Department of such a change, so that the timetable and other areas of administration can be kept up to date.

Google Classroom
Students will be added to the appropriate teacher’s Google Classroom and this will be used to share key information and lesson resources. All timetables are published and kept up to date on Google Classroom and it is also a great way for staff to share scores, backing tracks and other support materials with the students.

Storing Instruments in School
Where appropriate, we encourage students to bring their instruments to school for their instrument lessons (this is essential for woodwind and brass instruments). We have a dedicated storeroom in the Music Department (Room G34) where instruments can safely be dropped off in the morning and collected at the end of the school day. We do expect students to take their instruments home at the end of the day as they will need them to practise.

Student Obligations
It is the student’s responsibility to check the lesson timetable before 8.20 am on the day of their lesson in case of any changes to times or teacher absence. All timetables are available online on Google Classroom. If a student knows that they will be missing a lesson due to an exam, trip or other factor, they must discuss this with the tutor before the lesson to re-arrange.

If you would like your child to have music lessons, please fill in the Music Tuition Google Form as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully
